Mothman

Mothman, in West Virginian folklore, is a humanoid creature reportedly seen in the Point Pleasant area from November 15, 1966, to December 15, 1967. But is the Mothman in New York?

Did a mothman decide to take advantage of the apocalyptic air conditions plaguing the eastern coast of America and go for a cruise in the skies of New York City? Something huge was soaring through the smoky skies, but the hazy conditions from the Canadian wildfire smoke make it very hard to identify.

Some on the eastern coast are experiencing wildfire smoke conditions for the first time as strong winds have blown the effects of Canada’s wildfires down through NYC and continued right through the southern states. The burning fog makes the city look like a cyberpunk dystopia as people resume wearing N95 masks that block the smoke particles just as thoroughly as they block Covid. Adding to the suddenly alien landscape are reports of something resembling the legendary mothman flying by the tops of skyscrapers.

Mothman is typically considered as originating from the West Virginia area, but sightings have since spread all across the United States. This cryptid is usually described as a humanoid figure but with huge wings and glowing red eyes, and some believe seeing one is a portent of impending disaster. Of course, seeing mothman in an already apocalyptic-looking skyline seems a bit like that scene from Mean Girls where she says “there’s a 30% chance it’s already raining”.

Another possible explanation for the creature seen flying the skies is an owl that got a bit confused in the smoke, however some also believe owls are a bad omen too. It seems like the bad omen is that Canada is on fire in the first place, but the United States has sent firefighters to assist in extinguishing the deadly blaze.
